This article explores how post-war documentary film-makers negotiated complex social, formal, and autobiographical issues associated with representing mental illness and its treatments, and the extent to which their respective approaches helped to challenge conventional attitudes to alternative psychotherapies – especially within the context of advances in new documentary film-making technologies, alongside a wider culture of social activism. Focussing on A Look at Madness ( Regard sur la folie; Mario Ruspoli, 1962, France) and Now Do You Get It Why I Am (...) Crying? ( Begrijpt u nu waarom ik huil?; Louis van Gasteren, 1969, Netherlands), the article discusses how the collaborative, democratic aims of cinéma direct coincided with the ethos of institutional psychotherapy, and compares this with the relations between the documentary form and the subject of LSD-assisted psychotherapeutic techniques in Van Gasteren's film. Himbert of Garda was a little-known Franciscan theologian who studied at Paris around 1320 and probably served as Francis of Meyronnes’ secretary. His commentary on the Sentences provides precious insights on the development of Franciscan thought at Paris, connecting Francis of Meyronnes’ refined presentations of doctrine with raw academic debates between bachelors and masters in the Faculty of Theology. An appendix presents Himbert’s discussion of intrinsic degrees in Book I d.36, and both redactions of his treatment of the formal distinction (...) in the context of the divine attributes in Book I d.8, as well as parallel texts from Francis of Meyronnes. In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Aristotle’s Phantasia in the Rhetoric:Lexis, Appearance, and the Epideictic Function of DiscourseNed O’GormanIntroductionThe well-known opening line of Aristotle's Rhetoric, where he defines rhetoric as a "counterpart" (antistrophos) to dialectic, has spurred many conversations on Aristotelian rhetoric and motivated the widespread interpretation of Aristotle's theory of civic discourse as heavily rationalistic. This study starts from a statement in the Rhetoric less discussed, yet still important, that suggests that a visual (...) aspect inheres in Aristotle's theory of rhetoric. Near the beginning of book 3, which deals with lexis (style, sometimes subsuming delivery1 ), Aristotle conjoins lexis and phantasia with the copula "is" (eimi): "The subject of expression [lexeôs], however, has some small necessary place in all teaching; for to speak in one way rather than another does make some difference in regard to clarity, though not a great difference; but all these things are forms of outward show [phantasia] and intended to affect the audience" (1404a).2 Whereas scholars exploring the relationship between rhetoric and dialectic have compared and contrasted the Rhetoric and the Topics, I explore rhetoric's relationship with phantasia by reading the Rhetoric alongside De Anima. De Anima is Aristotle's seminal account of the senses and their relationship to psychê (often translated "soul"). It addresses topics intimately connected to rhetoric: perception, cognition, deliberation, visualization, imagination, and the image. Phantasia is integral to each of these psychic processes and to Aristotle's understanding of the function of appearance in human experience. Hence, itis a lens suitable for exploring the relationship between Aristotle's conception of civic discourse and his notions of sight and appearances as they relate to perception, interpretation, deliberation, and judgment. I find in Aristotle's phantasia a tie between his art of rhetoric and his psychology and phenomenology (anachronistic though these terms are). Aristotle's psychological works, as Richard McKeon points out, are foundational to Aristotle's philosophy, and thus to his Rhetoric. [End Page 16] "Psychological inquiries occupy an extremely important position in the philosophy of Aristotle, for the conception of the psychê lays the foundation for the continuity of functions in nature" (1947, 142). De Anima, especially, articulates the psychological and phenomenological conceptions often tacitly at work in the Rhetoric.The importance of phantasia for the trajectory of ancient rhetorical and aesthetic theory is seen in the parallels between the visual arts, rhetoric, and poetics in Greek and Roman thought.3 As David Freedberg states (perhaps, slightly overstates), parallels between painting and poetry are "to be found everywhere in classical literature" (1989, 50). With respect to such visual-verbal parallels in Aristotle, D. Thomas Benediktson's reading of Aristotle's psychological, poetic, and rhetorical works concludes that phantasia ties together the visual and the literary. "[Aristotle's passages on phantasia] do help to see why Aristotle took for granted the similarity, almost the identity, of literature and the visual arts. Both types of art are imagistic; they present to the viewer either an image, as in visual art, or as in literature, a set of moving images that the soul then uses as raw data (phantasia) to enable thought to occur" (2000, 170). Phantasia developed a legacy in Hellenistic aesthetics, where it came to designate suprarealism in painting, moving art "beyond imitation" (Fowler 1989, 180–81). In later Greco-Roman works, phantasia was used to designate vivid imagery in written and oral discourse, imagery that could create sights and scenes in the minds of audience members. As Quintilian noted in his discussion of forensic rhetoric, in Latin phantasiai were termed visiones. Here, phantasiabecame a mode of displacing narrative in rhetorical discourse:There are certain experiences which the Greeks call phantasiai, and the Romans visions [visiones], whereby things absent are presented to our imagination with such extreme vividness that they seem actually to be before our very eyes.... Resumo: Neste texto procuro fazer uma contextualização teórica a respeito dos fundamentos da sociologia da vida cotidiana, valendo-me dos seus princípios para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa em ciências sociais e da sua utilização como perspectiva metodológica. Nos percursos argumentativos que procuro desenvolver, situo o cenário e os sujeitos da pesquisa que motiva minhas reflexões, sinalizando alguns instrumentos necessários para a escavação do cotidiano. Tematizo os desvios das rotas do cotidiano e os desafios para a decifração dos seus enigmas. Enfatizo a (...) importância da construção de estratégias de observação do cotidiano, tendo as narrativas como matéria-prima para o seu conhecimento. Procuro entrelaçar os aportes teóricos de José Machado Pais e de Alberto Melucci no tocante às metodologias de pesquisa qualitativa com os caminhos investigativos construídos no meu estudo. Cotidiano.: In this text I try to contextualize theoretically the principles for the Sociology of daily life, making use of its principles for the development of a research in Social Sciences and its use as a methodological perspective. I discuss the bypasses from everyday’s routes in the construction of observatory strategies and the challenges to decipher their riddles. I also emphasize the construction of observation strategies for every day scenes, having narrative as raw-material for its knowledge. I try to interweave the theoretical approach at José Machado Pais and Alberto Melucci regarding all the equipment and qualitative technology with the research investigatory weights that were built in this study. Resumo: O presente artigo tem como objetivo propor uma hipótese para superação das críticas feitas por Robert Nozick e Michael Sandel à teoria da justiça de John Rawls, no que concerne à necessidade de se considerar aspectos históricos e práticos, na formulação de princípios na posição original. Para tanto, é preciso analisar inicialmente as correntes filosóficas do liberalismo, do libertarianismo e do comunitarismo, a fim de fundar as bases necessárias ao desenvolvimento do estudo. Na sequência, será apresentada a teoria da (...) justiça de John Raws, seguida das críticas formuladas pelo libertário Robert Nozick, no que se refere à necessidade de se levar em conta o princípio histórico. Nozick comprova, por meio do exemplo de Wilt Chamberlain, como aspectos históricos podem alterar as estruturas pré-estabelecidas pelas teorias de estado final. Após, serão examinados os apontamentos feitos por Michael Sandel, especialmente no que concerne ao individualismo metodológico. Sandel também chama a atenção para o fato de que, para garantir efetividade aos princípios, é preciso que os indivíduos se utilizem de sua experiência e das particularidades da comunidade e de seus integrantes. Ao final, será sugerida uma proposta de superação das críticas dirigidas a Rawls, mediante a relativização da abstração da posição original.: The present article aims to overcome the criticisms made by Robert Nozick and Michael Sandel of John Rawls’ theory of justice, specifically with regard to the need for considering historical and practical aspects in the formulation of principles in the original position. We first analyze the philosophical currents of liberalism, libertarianism, and communitarianism, in order to lay the foundations necessary for the development of the study. Next, Rawls’ theory of justice is presented, followed by the critique made by the libertarian Robert Nozick of the need to consider the historical principle. Nozick proves, through the example of the American basketball player Wilt Chamberlain, how historical aspects can alter structures that are pre-established by theories of final state. Michael Sandel’s observations are then analyzed, especially with regard to methodological individualism. Sandel draws attention to the fact that to ensure the effectiveness of principles, individuals need to draw on their experience and on the particularities of the community and its members. Finally, a proposal is made for overcoming the criticisms directed at Rawls; this is achieved by relativizing the abstraction of the original position. (shrink)

Bonnie Evans explores how the origins of film technologies in 1895 in France encouraged a series of innovative collaborations, influencing both psychological theorisation, and new filming techniques. Jeremy Blatter explains how Harvard psychologist Hugo Münsterberg created early films specifically designed to engage audiences using psychological tactics. Scott Curtis’ article examines how Yale psychologist Arnold Gesell was able to extract scientific data from (...) a film. Felix Rietmann’s article explores a collection of infant observation films from the 1930s and 1960s and how they developed unique narratives of mothers’ engagement with their children that did not necessarily match up with dominant scientific theories. Janet Harbord's article considers how a trilogy of films made at the Maudsley Hospital in the 1950s engaged with innovative film-making techniques that captured behaviour as discrete units. Seth Watter further examines how William S. Condon's use of the unique technology of the Bell and Howell 173BD projector in the 1960s created new understandings of human behaviour that could not have been predicted in advance, and which were highly influenced by the technology itself. Finally, Des O’Rawe explores how radical approaches in both anti-psychiatry, and documentary film-making in the 1960s created new opportunities for audiences to engage with different psychological states. All of these developments in film and psychology continue to influence understandings in both these fields to the present day. (shrink)

Aristote aurait compris de travers des formules où l'unité se range du côté de l'un des opposés. Plato and Aristotle presumably read the same (...) text of Heraclitus, and yet they come up with entirely opposite accounts of its meaning Plato thinks that Heraclitus and Empedocles disagree. Aristotle, that they agree. Scholars have failed to solve this conundrum, because they have failed to recognise in the fragments of Heraclitus the Obscure alternative forms of the law of the unity of opposites. Aristotle (wrongly) took one formulation of the law of the unity of opposites to imply an endless succession of the one and the many, and therefore the agreement of Heraclitus with Empedocles. Mit Inkrafttreten des Sozialgesetzbuches V, das in seinem §137 auch Krankenhäuser zu Qualitätssicherung verpflichtet, kann sich seit Ende der 80er Jahre kein Fachgebiet der Medizin mehr gegenüber der Teilnahme an qualitätssichernden Maßnahmen verschließen. Die gesetzlichen Grundlagen zur Einhaltung von Normen und definierten Abläufen zur Reproduzierbarkeit von Ergebnissen, die für den labormedizinischen und apparativen Bereich in der Forschung und Technik schon länger bestehen, haben den Bereich der medizinischen Versorgung erreicht [10, 11, 18]. Ziel der Maßnahmen ist es, die Struktur-, Prozeß- und (...) Ergebnisqualität der medizinischen Versorgung zu beeinflussen und einen immer besseren Stand der Versorgung zu erreichen („continuing quality improvement“/Qualitätsspirale). So sind nicht nur Steigerungen der Lebensqualität behandelter Patienten, Verbesserungen der Versorgungsstruktur und des Arbeitsumfeldes, der Aus- und Weiterbildung der medizinischen Berufsgruppen, sondern auch ökonomisch relevante Kosteneinsparungen durch Prozeßoptimierung möglich. Allerdings sind qualitätssichernde Aspekte in der medizinischen Behandlung und das Bewußtsein für die Berufsethik durchaus nicht neu. Bereits in der Antike war der zufriedene, erfolgreich behandelte Patient ein Aushängeschild für den behandelnden Praktiker und im Interesse der Gesellschaft. In vielen Kulturen gab und gibt es oft religiös begründete, berufsethische, gesetzliche Grundlagen oder auch traditionelle Riten dazu, wie Erfolg und Mißerfolg der Behandlung eines Menschen durch einen Arzt bestraft oder eben belohnt werden sollten. É este o momento de uma mudança de paradigma? Piaget será substituído por Vygotsky? Tal polêmica não teria por base uma atitude científica. Não é o caso de se privilegiar uma abordagem em detrimento de outra. Deve-se, antes, procurar conhecer suas similitudes e diferenças para participar do processo de renovação da pedagogia brasileira e para compreender por que a abordagem sócio-histórica vem ganhando espaço na construção do conhecimento.

Diese Arbeit zeigt, dass die Dualität des mathematischen und dynamischen Erhabenen bei Kant auch dem Zweck der dritten Kritik dient, die Kluft zwischen den Gebieten der Natur und der Freiheit zu schließen. In der Sekundärliteratur zu Kant wird das Erhabene oft als Anhang des Schönen oder aufgrund seiner mehrfachen Dualitäten als Bruch in Kants Ansatz angesehen. Dies geschieht, weil solche Interpretationen die Elemente der Theorie des Erhabenen atomisch und nicht systematisch rekonstruieren. Im Gegensatz dazu wird in dieser Arbeit mittels der (...) Resonanz der teleologischen Behandlung der Vernunft nicht nur die innere Systematik der dritten Kritik gezeigt, sondern auch die von der gesamten kritischen Philosophie. Die Vernunft als Vermögen der Zwecksetzung zu verstehen in ihrem praktischen und theoretischen Gebrauch, ist keine neue Idee oder neuer systematischer Rekonstruktionsversuch der kritischen Philosophie in der Kantforschung. Das eigentlich Neue in dieser Monografie ist, einen Beweis von ihrer teleologischen Einheit aus der ästhetischen Perspektive des paradoxen Gefühls des Erhabenen geleistet zu haben. (shrink)

Durante todos estos años en que la práctica de la filosofía se ha convertido en un tema de discusión, la sugerencia bibliográfica ha sido uno de los temas más comunes, tanto por los que nos hemos dedicado a ella, como por los que sienten curiosidad y quieren ampliar su información. Pero, antes que nada debo hacer una pequeña advertencia. Los repertorios bibliográficos que se encuentran comúnmente vinculados a este tema suelen estar contaminados por la idea de que la práctica filosófica (...) es diferente de la filosofía teórica, o mejor dicho, de la práctica académica. Es por ello que, en la mayoría de las recomendaciones aparecen textos que a los académicos pueden causar repelús, y a los excesivamente prácticos también. Mi intención no es evitar el desagrado ni la sorpresa por ambas partes, creo que es necesario mantener esa capacidad de asombro y disconformidad propia de la filosofía. Por ello, los materiales que citaré y comentaré a continuación sólo deben servir como guía de perplejos y no cómo literatura definitiva –aunque si imprescindible. Esta recensión bibliográfica se ha nutrido de varias fuentes. La primera ha sido la recomendación de J. Barrientos en su libro Introducción al asesoramiento filosófico, la segunda, se la debo a un trabajo de recopilación bibliográfica realizado por Albert Balaguer como alumno del Master en Práctica Filosófica y Gestión Social, y la tercera es producto de mis propias pesquisas e investigaciones que me han llevado a evaluar y escoger algunos materiales poco conocidos por quienes se dedican a la práctica de la filosofía. The Babel of Philosophical Practice: some Bibliographical Suggestions Throughout all these years in which philosophical practice has become a topic of discussion, bibliographical suggestion has been one of the commonest topics, both for those of us who have devoted ourselves to it and for those who feel curiosity and want to increase their information. But, before anything else, a small warning is due. The bibliographical repertoires commonly linked to this topic use to be contaminated by the idea that philosophical practice is different from theoretical philosophy, or, rather, from academic practice. This is why in most suggestions there are texts that scholars –and those of an excessively practical vein as well- may find objectionable. It is not my aim to avoid neither the unpleasantness nor the surprise on either party; I believe it is necessary to maintain the ability to be surprised and in disagreement that is proper of philosophy. This is why the materials that I will quote, and comment on, should only be regarded as guide for the perplexed ones, rather than as definitive literature –although it is an indispensable one. This bibliographical review has got its raw materials from several sources. The first one has been J. Barrientos’s recommendation in his book Introduction to Philosophical Counseling; the second one I owe to a bibliographical compilation made by Albert Balaguer as a student of the Master in Philosophical Practice and Social Management; and the third is the product of my own investigations, which have led me to evaluate and select some materials which are little known by those who dedicate themselves to philosophical practice.
